Pirates, Patriots and Rebels Boat Tour

Join author and historian, Captain Christopher Byrd Downey, for Charleston’s premiere boat tour…”Pirates, Patriots and Rebels”. Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Charleston Harbor while you cruise in the wake of over 300 years of amazing history. Captain Byrd will recount the stories of some of history’s most famous, and infamous, characters who have been a part of Charleston’s rich maritime heritage since the first colonists arrived here in 1670. From Blackbeard the pirate’s blockade in 1718 to the first shots of the Civil War in 1861, Charleston has been at the center of some of American history’s most pivotal moments. On your tour, you will hear the tale of history’s most unlikely pirate, Stede Bonnet, called the “Gentleman Pirate”, and his extraordinary trial and hanging on the Charleston waterfront. Visit the site of the patriot’s first real victory over the British in the American Revolution in 1776 and those events that gave South Carolina the nickname “The Palmetto State”. You will cruise along the beaches and marshlands that were the inspiration for former Charleston resident, and master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe’s most successful story. Hear the dramatic story of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship, and her amazing discovery and recovery nearly 150 years after she sank. All of these events and so many more happened right here in Charleston and you can enjoy them with your family and friends aboard Captain Byrd’s unique and beautiful boat Persistence! Tours are for groups of 6 or less, so they are perfect for families or groups of friends. Tours depart at 7:30 PM from beautiful Shem Creek Park - Shrimp Boat Lane, Mount Pleasant and lasts approximately 90 minutes.
