Captain Byrd always likes to take his road bike with him when he travels and visits new places. However, like many of you, when he visits a new city or town, he lacks local knowledge and does not know anyone who will guide him on a safe, fun bike route on lightly traveled back roads. Captain Byrd is determined not to let that be the case for anyone visiting Charleston. If you have brought your bike with you to Charleston and you are looking for someone to take you on a great ride, with some Lowcountry history and culture mixed in, then this is the tour for you!

Join local historian and author Christopher Byrd Downey (Captain Byrd) for a fun and informative bike ride through more than three centuries of Lowcountry history. Rides from 20 – 45 miles are available. Riders can choose routes along roads through beautiful protected forests. Choose to visit historic Mepkin Abbey on the Cooper River and take a short tour of the monastery and enjoy a short service with the resident monks. Stops at the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Biggins Church and Strawberry Chapel, once the center of the bustling colonial town of Childsbury, are available. Trace the exploits of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, as you ride past historic plantations. For those who just want to ride for a good workout, Captain Byrd will guide through Charleston’s lightly traveled back roads for a high energy bike ride.

$1.25 per mile. Minimum $35 per person.

All skill levels are welcome. Helmets are required. Captain Byrd can assist with bike rental but it is not included in the price of the tour.
